Rainey Evans
“She has a natural ease in front of the camera—light, playful, and completely herself.”
Photographing for Stroll South of Broad has given me the opportunity to meet some truly unforgettable people, and Rainey Evans was one of them.
Many locals know her from the beloved Charleston children’s show Happy Rainey, which aired from 1960 to 1980 following the Mickey Mouse Club on CBS. The show was both educational and entertaining, and beautifully ahead of its time in the Lowcountry.
Spending time with Rainey felt like stepping into a story. We sat in her kitchen sipping coffee while she shared memories that were as vibrant and warm as she is. She has a natural ease in front of the camera—light, playful, and completely herself.
We photographed her at home, surrounded by the charm of her backyard—grapefruit trees, a classic brick wall, and the quiet beauty of her everyday space. Somewhere along the way, I was also introduced to her neighbor’s cat, who had clearly decided Rainey was home after the passing of her longtime companion.
Moments like these are why I love what I do—capturing people not just as they are seen, but as they are felt.
