Dr. Jack

“As a Charleston photographer, spaces like this are incredibly inspiring.“

Photographing for Stroll South of Broad continues to connect me with remarkable people and the rich history of Charleston’s South of Broad neighborhood.

Dr. Jack lives next door to Freddie and Bill Hecht at 20 South Battery, where they share not only proximity, but a genuine friendship. His home is also known as a sought-after boutique hotel in Charleston, welcoming guests into a space filled with character, elegance, and history.

From the moment I arrived, I felt a warm and inviting energy. Jack had thoughtfully selected his suit, showcasing his signature flair for style.

I was first greeted by his dog, Maverick, whose role is clearly to welcome each guest. He has a striking presence, yet carries himself with the manners of a true gentleman.

Inside, I was immediately drawn to the interiors—the rich tones, the blue sofas, and especially the grand ballroom. As a Charleston photographer, spaces like this are incredibly inspiring.

After the shoot, Jack shared a story that stayed with me. As a boy, he spent time playing in the park just across the street and decided that one day, he would live on the Battery. While this wasn’t the exact home he had imagined, he found his place right next door.

He then gave us a tour, and I found myself immersed not only in the architecture, but in the stories held within the home—the gatherings, the guests, and the many moments that have passed through over time. It’s easy to understand why visitors are drawn here, both for its beauty and the experience it offers.

Photographing in historic Charleston homes—and boutique hotel spaces like this—is always more than a session. It’s an experience of connection, story, and place.
