AUGUST 2025
Hal Truesdale & Karl Beckwith Smith
Karl is a gifted artist whose work can be seen throughout downtown Charleston. His portfolio includes murals, historic decorative painting, and restoration work across more than 175 homes, restaurants, and churches—many of which have been honored with Preservation Society of Charleston Carolopolis Awards. His work is truly woven into the visual history of the city.
Hal brings a different, yet equally rich artistic path. After owning a salon for over 30 years, he also became a celebrated figure in Charleston’s theater scene—earning recognition as Best Actor three years in a row, with numerous performances that have left a lasting impression locally.
Together, they represent a life built around creativity, dedication, and mutual support. Their story began in New York City in 1972, and over the decades, they’ve built a life and legacy rooted in Charleston—continuing to contribute to the community they love.
For the cover, we chose to photograph them in Karl’s studio—a space that felt especially fitting. It captured them exactly as they are: at home in their craft, working side by side, and supporting one another in the things they love most about life.
Hearing their stories, their passion, and witnessing the way they’ve built a life together through art was incredibly inspiring.
“Stepping inside felt like entering a living, breathing reflection of their creative lives.”
Photographing for Stroll South of Broad Meeting Karl Beckwith Smith and Hal Truesdale was truly a memorable experience.
Our session began in their home on the west side of the peninsula, where they have lived together for 33 years. Stepping inside felt like entering a living, breathing reflection of their creative lives—thoughtfully curated, deeply personal, and filled with artistic expression.
